We hope to create a space that is “clean, neat, and organized” so that people from all backgrounds feel safe coming there to “enjoy a coffee, read, be on the internet, study, whatever the case may be, but most importantly to get together socially and enjoy time with friends and family.”

Mr. Arshad Javid discovered the value of ideas and the significance of connections with others while growing up in Faisalabad, Pakistan. His parents gave him an appreciation for the works of famous philosophers and intellectuals. Mr. Javid’s interest in philosophy may be traced back to his early childhood, when he and his siblings would read bedtime stories by Sadi, Rumi, and Al-Lama Muhammad Iqbal. His father was an entrepreneur in the transportation and real estate sectors in Punjab, from whom he inherited most of his business sense. In both words and deeds, his father was a powerful role model for all of his kids, and they are all successful business people today.
Mr. Javid’s narrative may be a classic immigrant story—a young man’s pursuit of the American dream. He was coasting through British schooling, uninterested in politics or the world around him, until arriving in the US from Pakistan in 1979. After moving here, he realized what it meant to be an American and a global citizen. He watched his university classmates work hard and succeed. He observed how one person could change his school, family, and neighborhood. The US proves personal freedom can lead to social duty. Mr. Javid wanted to improve himself and be a responsible, thoughtful adult because this country seemed to offer unlimited possibilities. He believes other Pakistanis may improve their lives and help their fellow citizens build a peaceful society if given similar possibilities.
Mr. Javid chose Chicago after four years in Seattle. The city has a vibrant cultural, business, and political life yet is still small enough to feel like a community. After studying philosophy and business and graduating from the University of Illinois’ Chicago College of Business Administration, Mr. Javid opened a modest chain of coffeehouses named after his favorite philosopher,René Descartesstarted as a little UIC cart. The first custom-built cart with plumbing and electricity became a campus hub. He opened storefronts downtown, in Rogers Park, and in Lincoln Square, and he intended to build more in the coming years.
There are both Eastern and Western philosophers on the walls of his cafes. He is able to compete with chain stores because he has great customer service and a smart, friendly atmosphere. In his cafe, people talk to each other, chill out, and think. His enthusiasm for connecting with people and cultures drives his work and personal life.Somewhere along the way life took its own course and many things changed but Mr. Javid always believed destiny is the best author of life and things always end up where they are supposed to be.

His aim with the cafe was to make it a safe space for people from all walks of life, a place where people can connect and see the world through a different lens. He feels that he has achieved his dream but Mr. Javid also feels that there is always room for improvement. With nothing but sheer enthusiasm and determination, Mr. Javid plans on making Ka’fein-Espresso one of the largest cafe chains in the USA.
